Huge oak doors mounted at the portal facing the river were opened and closed each day to prevent cattle arid other livestock from wandering into the tunnel.
Canada’s oldest railway tunnel is not found in the wilds of Northern Ontario or interior British Columbia, but oddly enough, passes right underneath downtown Brockville, the St. Lawrence River community known as the eastern gateway to the Thousand Islands.
